Redesigning Never Alone

SUNY Canton English 314 Project

Project

We were tasked with choosing a story from our course and redesigning it in a different multi media presentation.

We chose the game Never Alone to redesign into a graphic novel. This is because we believe that the story behind the game is too valuable for only the select audience of gamers to experience. We  wanted to bring this story to light in a different way to expand its reach to a larger audience.

We swear the graphic novel adaptation of Never Alone will maintain the emotional depth and cultural authenticity of the original game while presenting the story in a format that encourages reading, discussion, and appreciation for Indigenous storytelling and cultural traditions.

Intended Audience

Our proposed graphic novel adaptation of Never Alone is intended for children and young adults, approximately ages 10-18. This audience includes upper elementary through high school readers who enjoy adventure stories, fantasy, folklore, and visually driven narratives. The graphic novel format is especially effective for reluctant readers and visual learners, making complex cultural stories more engaging and accessible for a larger outreach of individuals.

While the primary audience is younger readers, the story’s themes of friendship, perseverance, respect for nature, family and community also appeals to those looking to add more culturally meaningful literature into their collections including parents, educators, and libraries. The original game was developed in partnership with the Iñupiat people to preserve and share original Indigenous stories, adapting it into a graphic novel provides another educational tool that can be used in classrooms, libraries, and communities all around.
