Witness the transformation

Explore the journey from inspiration to innovation. This page presents a side-by-side comparison of the original "Never Alone" game and its reimagined graphic novel form, designed to captivate a broader audience.

The original vision: Never Alone

The original Never Alone tells its story through an interactive video game where players actively participate in Nuna’s journey. Instead of simply observing events players control both Nuna and the Arctic fox while solving environmental puzzles that require cooperation between the two characters. The game experience reinforces one of the story’s central themes that success comes through teamwork. The game’s design experience encourages exploration. Players gradually uncover the narrative by moving through levels, observing environmental details, and unlocking “Cultural Insights” which are short documentary videos featuring Iñupiat elders and community members. These videos provide historical and cultural context that deepens the player’s understanding of the traditions that inspire the story.

The information architecture follows a chronological progression through the Arctic landscape. Each level introduces a new environment and new challenges while gradually unveiling additional pieces of the storyline. Players learn about the world through interacting with it instead of a lengthy exposition. This creates an opportunity for deep connection and storytelling experience. The information design emphasizes simplicity and emotional storytelling. The Minimal dialog allows for environmental visuals, animation, music, and gameplay to tell the narrative. The game designs including realistic snow, wing gusts, soft lighting, and atmospheric sound adds to the feeling of isolation, wonder, and hope that it suggested throughout the storyline. The color palette reflects the harsh Arctic climate using cool blues, whites and greys to dramaticise the cool lonely feeling that Nuna is feeling throughout her adventure. Warm tone oranges and yellows appear mainly when warm emotions are present including moments of connection and village scenes. This reinforces the theme of family, friendship, safety and hope.

Redesigned: The graphic novel

Our redesigned version of Never alone transformers the interactive video game into a visually engaging graphic novel while preserving its core message and emotional impact. Unlike the game, readers will experience the story through carefully planned comic panels rather than gameplay. Due to the change of interaction readers will attain the information and message from the storyline through the illustrations, narration, pacing and page layouts.

The information architecture remains chronological and closely follows the original narrative. Each chapter will represent a major stage of Nuna’s adventure, including departure from the village, meeting the fox, crossing the Arctic, encounters with spiritual beings and the little people as well as confronting the Blizzard man and returning home to her village. The familiar structure maintains a clear narrative while allowing readers to focus more on character development and the emotional moments throughout the story. The design experience shifts from an interactive game to a more visual immersion. The illustrations will establish the Arctic landscape, capture characters' emotions, create suspense and show action throughout Nuna’s journey. The impact the original design had on its audience will remain the same because the Arctic’s environment is so critical to the overall identity of the story. The color palette will remain the same with some additional colors to allow for a more overall realistic environmental feel. The warm tones of oranges and yellows will continue to represent the feeling of safety, love and community throughout the novel.

Although the storyline, color palette and emotional tone remains the same between the original game and the redesigned graphic novel, the illustration style will change significantly. Instead of the 3 dimensional computer generated models for the video game, the graphic novel will use a flat 2 dimensional illustration design. Strong line work, expressive character designs, textured shading, and cinematic panel compositions will replace the 3D modeled environments while still maintaining the artistic identity of the original story. This artistic design choice offers several advantages for the redesigned project. Flat lay allows readers to focus more closely on the facial expressions, body language and emotional storytelling from the characters. The page layout provides opportunity to control the pacing, suspense to build, which ultimately leads to a more engaging audience experience. With these choices the overall story and meaning behind Never Alone remains visually appealing while also becoming more accessible to all people who enjoy illustrated storytelling and literature.
