Nuna's courageous journey
Never Alone follows Nuna, a courageous young Iñupiat girl whose village is threatened by an endless Arctic blizzard. As food supplies disappear and survival becomes uncertain, Nuna sets a course to discover the source behind the mysterious storm that is affecting her community. Accompanied by an Arctic Fox that Nuna rescues, the two faithful companions travel together across the frozen landscapes with dangers of all types around every corner. Along the course the two will combine their unique strengths to overcome environmental obstacles. Nuna uses her traditional bola to solve problems and protect herself, while the fox communicates with ancient spirit helpers that guide the pair through the dangerous landscapes they must manage.
Themes of unity and nature
Instead of having the typical goal of defeating an enemy through violence, Never Alone teaches that understanding, cooperation, and harmony with nature create lasting solutions. These universal themes make the story meaningful for all readers allowing everyone to connect with and relate to parts of the authentic Iñupiat traditions and storytelling.
A glimpse into the adventure
Throughout their journey they encounter mythical beings from traditional Iñupiat folklore, including mischievous Little People, powerful spirits, and the mysterious blizzard man, whose overwhelming power seems to be the cause of the mysterious storm holding her community captive. As Nuna continues on her adventure she learns that courage is not measured by physical strength alone but also through compassion, patience, cooperation, and respect for nature. Eventually near the conclusion of the story the Arctic Fox sacrifices itself to save Nuna’s life. It then returns as a spirit guide to continue to lead and support Nuna while she restores balance and ends the blizzard saving her community. The fox’s sacrifice demonstrates the enduring power of friendship and selflessness.
